Movie – Starman (sci-fi romance)

This is a new kind of exercise I am experimenting with.  This movie is a science-fiction romance suitable for all members of the family.  It is thought-provoking and has some humorous moments as the alien acclimates to our strange human customs.

Simple plot:  An alien ship encounters a Voyager space probe that we sent out many years ago inviting aliens to come visit the Earth.  So the aliens decide to send an alien scout ship to visit the Earth.  The lone alien visitor’s ship crashes on the Earth, and he becomes stranded here.  He learns that the atmosphere on Earth is hostile to him, and he estimates that he has three days to be rescued or he will die.  Suddenly, he has an urgent need to learn enough simple English to ask a human to help him rendezvous with his mother ship in three days so he can be rescued.  The movie is about how he accomplishes this.  The US government learns of his arrival and tries to capture him.  Meanwhile, the alien encounters a widowed woman and forces her to drive him to the rendezvous point.  There are some funny moments as her feelings go from terror to fear to curiosity to wonder to love.

These are the basic actions I would envision that you would take:

  1. Watch the movie (free) with English audio and English subtitles for understanding
  2. Take notes so you can summarize the movie later, pausing as necessary.
  3. Write down any words or phrases that are new to you, pausing as necessary.
  4. (Optional)  Watch the movie a second time with NO subtitles for listening comprehension practice.
  5. Summarize for me (in writing or speaking) what you think the movie was about — the basic plot with some key events, similar to what I have done above but with a little more detail.
  6. We will then discuss some selected scenes in the movie to exercise your new vocabulary and test your listening comprehension skills (understanding).

In this movie, the alien will learn three hand gestures, which I will call (a) Terrific, (2) Okay, and (3) Screw-You.  Tell me what was happening when he learned these three gestures.

  1. My short description about this movie:
An Alien space ship crash landed on Earth and an alien who was aboard in it survived and managed to visit a nearby house. There he found a man who had died a few years ago and took his identity by using its alien magical powers. The alien transformed himself into the human whose identity taken by the alien.
After seeing her husband alive who she had believed died earlier, she was shocked and tried to escape. But However, he managed to threaten her and forced her to drive him to the Rendezvous point to meet his alien friends in the mothership.
During the journey, he learned some English words that helped him to communicate with the humans. Being a newcomer to the Earth, He found some difficulties with adjusting himself to this society. So some uncomfortable incidents happened and the US law enforcement department was alarmed by those incidents.
The lady started to empathize with him and fell in love with him. She tried her best to tackle the US law enforcement and drop the alien at the Rendezvous point. Some of the good samaritans/passersby during the journey also helped her to reach there.
At the climax, they reached the rendezvous point and the lady begged to take her with him too. But he refused that appeal and said he had given her a boy and she was supposed to raise him on the Earth. He also handed a so-called “magic marble” over to her and said his child will know what to do with that. Eventually, he was aboard on the Mothership and left the earth.

  2. Good plot summary, Vasanth.

Here are some suggested advanced corrections.

An alien spaceship crash landed on Earth and an alien who was aboard in it survived and managed to visit a nearby house. There he found a lock of hair from a man who had died a few years ago and created a clone of the dead man took his identity by using advanced DNA-manipulation technology its alien magical powers. Since the alien existed as a form of pure energy, he was then able to inhabit the clone and function as a human transformed himself into the human whose identity taken by the alien.

After seeing her husband seemingly reincarnated alive who she had believed died earlier, she was shocked and tried to escape. But However, he coerced managed to threaten her and forced her to drive him to the a rendezvous point so his to meet his alien friends in the mothership could rescue him from Earth’s hostile environment.  During the journey, he learned some English words that helped him to communicate with the humans. Being a newcomer to the Earth, he found had some difficulties with adjusting himself to this human society. So some uncomfortable unfortunate incidents happened and the US law enforcement department was alarmed by those incidents.

The lady started to empathize with him and fell in love with him. She tried her best to tackle evade the US law enforcement and drop the alien at the rendezvous point. Some of the good Samaritans /passersby they met during their journey also helped her them to reach there their destination.

At the climax, they reached the rendezvous point and the lady begged him to take her with him too, but he refused because he knew that she could not survive on his world due to environmental differences. that appeal and He told her that said he had given her a baby boy and she was supposed to raise him on the Earth. He also handed a so-called “magic marble” over to her and said his child will would know what to do with that. Eventually, he went was aboard on the Mothership and left the Earth.

    Notes

    1. We help someone (to) do something.  We omit the “to” for an infinitive following the verb “to help”.
    2. Don’t capitalize words randomly.  Common nouns are NOT capitalized, only proper nouns that are the name of a specific instance of a class.  For example, rendezvous and alien are not the names of any specific things and should NOT be capitalized.  The Earth, on the other hand, is the name of a specific planet and should be capitalized.
    3. A clipping of a person’s hair (from his head) kept as a memento is called a lock of hair.
    4. Aliens don’t use magic; they use technology.  πŸ™‚
    5. We have/meet with/encounter difficulties.  We don’t find them.
    6. Incidents may be unfortunate/untowards/awkward but not uncomfortable.
    7. We tackle a problem but not people (except in American football).  We evade the law if we are trying to avoid capture.
    8. But and however are redundant.  Don’t use both together.
    9. Samaritan is a proper noun because it is a figurative reference to a citizen from the country of Samaria.  (Compare to an American or a Russian.)
    10. We help someone do something.
    11. He said (to no one in particular).  He told her (direct communication from one person to another person).
    12. His child will know (fact) => he said his child would know (indirect speech and future prediction; child has not been born yet).
    13. We go aboard (motion indicated) a spaceship and leave the Earth.  He went aboard and left.
