We’ll start with Chapter One.
Pilots, street cleaners, coach, nurturers, landscapers, food delivery people, speaker, instructor

Lee Wright 9:08 PM
Jonas, Lily, Asher, and the family’s mother and father.
2c – tell us about these characters
Asher is one of the students in this community.  He arrives late to school and has to apologize to his class for inconveniencing his class. => fish hatchery, salmon
Said he was distraught, instead of distracted.
Teacher corrected because he did not use the “right word”.
“standard apology phrase” => The whole class recited “We accept your apology, Asher.” => So an apology is a RITUAL. => Strange community.
Asher is Jonas’s best friend.  Cheerful, clumsy not serious, not organized
Jonas is first child, soon to be 12, mature, compassionate, educated, polite.  He worries about using the “right word”.  Introverted perhaps.  Jonas is apprehensive at the start of this story. (frightened was his first word).
The airplane incident was 10 years ago.

Vasanth Prabakar 9:21 PM => Deja vu

Lee Wright 9:22 PM
Lily = > 7, straight-forward, tough, clenched fist, defiant, angry, emotional, Jonas’s younger sister.  She was a Seven.
Mother => caring, smart, understanding, Dept of Justice
Father => hard-headed?, cold-hearted?, nurturer, Childcare Center, compassionate
Every child had ONE “comfort object” (toy).  Lily has an elephant.  Jonas had a bear.  “hand-me-downs” recycling by passing it on

Lee Wright 9:29 PM
He felt his job was important.  newborns are fragile, helpless
Making a mistake => Public apology in a ritual

Lee Wright 9:31 PM
obedience or conformity If it’s only for children, then might be okay.
2.e. Describe the incident about the plane.
Cargo planes were common.  Fat, squat, ugly.  Never fly overhead though.  Always across the river away from the community.  One year ago, Jonas saw a sleek, shiny, fast jet.  needle-nosed

Lee Wright 9:35 PM
Extremely unusual.  An announcement Everyone STOP and GO inside and HIDE. Outside was empty. No one was in sight. This community seems to fear new technology for some reason.
Speaker announcement:  Oh, don’t worry, everyone.  It was just a pilot making a mistake.  But HE WILL BE RELEASED.  a flavor of menace to this society
NEEDLESS TO SAY, HE WILL BE RELEASED,
There was an ironic tone to that final message, as if the Speaker found it amusing; and Jonas had smiled a little, though he knew what a grim statement it had been. For a contributing citizen to be released from the community was a final decision, a terrible punishment, an overwhelming statement of failure.
He made a wrong turn.  Jonas was amused by the speaker’s speech tone.

Lee Wright 9:47 PM
Seems sophisticated, organized.  Speaker probably knew exactly what happened.  The Speaker may have been lying .
Lee Wright 9:48 PM
2.f Why was Jonas feeling “frightened” in Chapter 1?  December is approaching.

Vasanth:  Winter is coming…  (Lee: Haha.  Games of Thrones reference.)

Lee Wright 9:51 PM
But it’s the Ceremony that I’m apprehensive about. It’s almost December.” Lily looked up, her eyes wide. “The Ceremony of Twelve,”
2.h Describe the Dinner Ritual.  The Telling of the Feelings Ritual
Lily. ANGRY  Why was she angry?  An “animal”!  Horrible behavior.
Mother WORRY GUILT Repeat offender upset, worry, guilt.
Father SAD
Jonas APPREHENSIVE.  This evening he almost would have preferred to keep his feelings hidden. But it was, of course, against the rules.
3.a. Would you like to live here?
Tauriel doesn’t like it. Too controlling… Too little freedom.
Vasanth – don’t like.
Jorgen – pros and cons
Jorgen – don’t like it.
Ivan? You may live a happy life. It is peaceful and orderly.

Lee Wright 10:06 PM
No hunger or stress or conflict that we can see.
Speaking your feelings is GOOD.
Tauriel – communities are about the same in this world.  Every community needs rules.

Lee Wright 10:09 PM
Lily’s experience  Other communities have different rules.  Comparing the communities…
Ivan’s “Baby Duck Syndrome” or “imprinting”:  => What we know first doesn’t seem menacing…  We accept it as familiar..  The first thing you see must be your mother!
